Most shoots live inside three focal lengths. Identify those first, then decide whether primes or a zoom get you there faster.
When primes win
Controlled sets, interviews and low light. Faster apertures, better character, fewer compromises.
When a zoom wins
Events, documentary and anything where you cannot stop to swap glass.
