The 80 per cent rule
Most shoots live inside three focal lengths. Identify those first, then decide whether primes or a zoom get you there faster.
When primes win
Controlled sets, interviews and low light. Faster apertures, better character, fewer compromises.
When a zoom wins
Events, documentary and anything where you cannot stop to swap glass.
| Scenario | Suggested kit |
|---|---|
| Interview | 35mm + 85mm primes |
| Event | 24-70mm zoom |
| Product | 100mm macro |
Rent both for the first day if you are unsure — the extra cost is small next to a missed shot.
